Carbon Monoxide Detectors May Be Soon Required for California Homes

September 7, 2009 by Gilda Duhs · 1 Comment

If approved , SB 183, will require homeowners to install carbon monoxide detection (CO) devices in their home by Jan. 1, 2011.  The cost of these range from $25 – approx. $200.  This new law would apply not only to single family owners but also to multi-family homes or apartments.  You may also purchase a combined smoke detector/CO device.

This could mean in the future, when you are buying that ocean view Laguna Beach home, Dana Point oceanfront home, or golf course view Laguna Niguel home, that the seller will be required to install these devices before escrow closes, similar to that of the current requirement for smoke detectors and water heater bracing.
